The learn-to-skate program is a USFSA structured program that teaches basic figure skating skills from the ages of 4 through adult. Skaters participating in our Learn-to-Skate program become members of the USFSA Learn-to-Skate Program (not regular USFSA or MCFSC club members) and receive a membership card and booklet explaining all the levels of the learn-to-skate program. (This booklet is generally received after first session completed.)
Learn-to-Skate Levels offered through MCFSC:
Snowplow Sam 1, 2 & 3
Basic 1 through 8
Freeskate 1 through 6 (Freeskate is not free – it is a description of the skating program)
Adult
Winter skating lessons are once a week (30 minute group sessions) with 3 sessions during the winter season. Summer skating lessons are twice a week (30 minute group sessions) with 2 sessions during the summer depending on the ice schedule. Summer ice schedules are posted by April. Fall-Winter schedule are posted in September.
Children 4½ through 6½ are placed initially in the Snowplow Sam 1 class and are assessed by our instructors in the first class. Children in the Snowplow Sam classes are also required to wear helmets. (bike helmets are fine)
Children 7 and up are placed in a Basic 1 class.
Adults are placed in a Basic 1 or the Adult class.
During each session, based on the skating class, skaters are instructed on the skills needed for that level. The last week of the session, the skaters are tested and given an evaluation sheet of their skating skills and advised if passed to the next skating level. Levels are passed in order as listed above. Once a skater has completed that level, they are rewarded with a badge.
Skaters who have participated in other Learn-to-skate programs or have had past skating experience should contact our Program Director, Chris Pawlowski.
Once a skater is in Basic 4, they are eligible to become members of MCFSC. (See MCFSC Club members)
