Q: I want to skate more than 30 minutes per week in my group learn-to-skate class, how do I do that?
A: The Ice Center offers various open skating times during the week that you can practice your skating for a nominal fee. Public skate times are posted in the Ice Center Lobby. Or, if you are at a Basic 4 level or above, you can become a MCFSC club skater and purchase additional ice time. (See Club Skater button for more info)
Q: My child has been at the same level for 2 sessions now, why is she not passing?
A: Each skating level has certain basic skating elements that need to be mastered to pass to the next level. Each level builds on the previous level, some are more difficult than others. Depending on the individuals ability to master each skill (example: leg strength, coordination) will determine how they progress through the levels.
Q: I have been skating with my friends and parents, but have never taken a lesson, what skating level do I start at?
A: If you are 4 ½ to 6 ½ years of age, you will start at a Snowplow 1. If you are 7 years of age or older, you will start at a Basic 1. If you are an adult, you will start in the Adult classes or Basic 1. Once you start in that class, your instructor will evaluate your skills and decide which class is appropriate if necessary.
Q: I was ill last week and missed my learn-to-skate class, can I make this class up?
A: No, the class is a group class and we cannot allow skaters to make-up classes as class numbers will vary too much.
Q: My child’s Learn-to-skate class has 8 skaters, but I saw another class on the ice that had only 2 skaters, why is this?
A: Learn-to-Skate class size are based on how many skaters signed up for that level on that day. We try to have no more than 10 skaters per class, per instructor. If a class is larger, an instructor may have a student helper assist the class.
Q: My child was signed up for the learn-to-skate session and attended 2 times and no longer wants to come, can my fee be refunded?
A: No
Q: My child was signed up for the learn-to-skate session and due to a medical condition is no longer able to skate. Can my fee be refunded?
A: If you have a written excuse from your child’s physician stating that they recommend the skater not to skate, please give it to the Director. MCFSC will refund your money for any unused session.
Q: My child really enjoys skating and I would like to continue with the Learn-To-Skate program, but the cost is a hardship at this time for my family. What should I do?
A: MCFSC has a scholarship program for the Learn-To-Skaters, you may inquire with the Director to receive this for your child. This scholarship is awarded by the Board of Directors Executive Committee. All inquiries are confidential.
